Reflection Essay

Taking this class has been a transformative experience for my writing skills, particularly in transitioning from MLA to APA format. When I first started, my familiarity with MLA was my comfort zone. I knew how to structure papers, cite sources, and format the Works Cited page with relative ease. In this course, I was assigned an argumentative essay and a rhetorical analysis essay. Both of these essays required me to do some deep critical thinking and a lot of research. There was even some information I obtained from these essays. I’m really glad my professor assigned these essays, they were beneficial for this course and also really helpful for proving points and obtaining research. However, the shift to APA posed new challenges, requiring me to adapt to a different set of rules and conventions.

One of the most significant improvements in my writing has been mastering APA format. Initially, the differences between MLA and APA seemed daunting. The in-text citations, the structure of the reference page, and the overall format were all new to me. However, through diligent practice and attention to detail, I have become more comfortable with these elements. I have learned to properly format in-text citations, ensuring they align with APA guidelines. Additionally, I have improved in creating a reference page, and understanding the nuances of listing authors, publication dates, and titles correctly.

Despite these advancements, I still face challenges, particularly with hanging indentations. In MLA, the concept of a hanging indent was straightforward, but in APA, applying it consistently across different types of sources has been tricky. However, I am making progress. By using tools like word processors and referencing guides, I am gradually becoming more proficient. Each assignment brings me closer to mastering this aspect of APA formatting.

Another area where I have seen significant improvement is in creating a comprehensive Works Cited page. Initially, compiling sources and formatting them correctly was time-consuming and prone to errors. However, with practice, I have developed a systematic approach to gathering and organizing my sources. This has not only improved the accuracy of my citations but also enhanced the overall quality of my papers. I now feel more confident in my ability to present a well-structured and properly cited reference page.

Overall, my writing has improved remarkably since taking this class. The transition from MLA to APA has broadened my understanding of academic writing conventions and enhanced my attention to detail. While I still have areas to work on, such as perfecting hanging indentations, I am proud of the progress I have made. This class has equipped me with valuable skills that will undoubtedly benefit my future academic and professional endeavors. The journey from MLA to APA has been challenging, but it has also been immensely rewarding, marking a significant milestone in my development as a writer.
